Studying Abroad in Vietnam

Vietnam sounds like an exotic and slightly mysterious destination to many people who have never visited the country. Some parents of our international students know Vietnam only as a country which was at war more than 30 years ago, and worry if it might be dangerous. But the Vietnam of today is a very different place to the war-time Vietnam of long ago.

The currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong, often abbreviated to VND. The US dollar is also accepted in many daily transactions, although in recent times there has been some tightening of this by the Vietnamese Government, which prefers transactions to be made in the local currency.

Banking is easy and convenient with local and international banks. All have automatic teller machines (ATMs) which are found in many department stores and hotels and throughout the city in various locations.

Why Study in Vietnam?

Higher education institutions in Vietnam offer a wide range of programs and some schools specialize in certain areas. For example, Ho Chi Minh City specializes in science and technology while Hanoi University specializes in language studies, but also provides programs taught in English in the areas of business, finance, accounting, international studies and information technology.

Vietnam has both public and private universities. Public universities operate at the national level (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) or at the regional level (Thai Nguyen, Hue and Da Nang).

Admission Requirements at the Universities in Vietnam

Students can apply online directly for admission in any undergraduate courses or a higher education courses in any of the relevant universities of Vietnam. TOEFL, SAT, IELTS is the general requirements to start studying in Vietnam, whereas the marks required to get an admission in any of the recognized university depends on the university.

Cost of Living in Vietnam

The cost of living for students in Vietnam varies depending on the student’s way of living. It is estimated at $2500.
Accommodation Costs
The accommodation charges range from VND 7,000,000 to 15,000,000 depending upon the apartment- furnished or unfurnished.
On-campus accommodation costs in Vietnam may range from $US 1,200 to $US 1,600 per semester, inclusive of utilities and other services.

Tuition Fees at the Universities in Vietnam

Tuition fees at the public universities in Vietnam are very low and affordable when compared to those in private universities. Yearly tuition at public schools is low, from free to about $US 1,000 for Vietnamese students.

International students pay rates from about $US 1,000 to $US 2,500 per year. Private schools are somewhat expensive, with total program tuition ranging from about $US 30,000 to $US 40,000. Most master’s degrees can be completed in 1-2 years, depending upon the program and whether the student attends full time or part time.

Academic Calendar

The academic year at most schools is based on semesters and begins in early September. First semester classes conclude in early January, followed by exams and a holiday period for Tet, the Lunar New Year. Second semester runs from mid-February through late June, followed by exams. Some schools use a trimester system, which includes three 16-week semesters.
